Day 36
On leaving Forbes, we weren’t
really sure where to go next, so we settled on Narrandera where we stayed at
the sportsground for two nights free camp. The sportsground was on the
Murrumbidgee River and just down from the Koala reserve. We went to the look
for koalas and found two, so we were happy. On our second day, we had a
gentleman come buy and sell us a bucket of oranges, mandarins and lemons for
$2...they were delicious. We also had a stray dog befriend us...a beautiful
Labrador.
Day 38
Our next destination was Hay,
another free camp near the Murrumbidgee River. This place was dusty and that’s
an understatement. Here we ran into the first couple that we had met at Forbes
(the ones on their toilet runs) and they came over to chat, it was great to
catch up and hear where they had been. We also met a family of two adults, four
kids, and two really large dogs that were both friendly and full of saliva (the
dogs, not the people) that we still stay in touch with (the people, not the
dogs). Hay was really a chance to catch up on washing and cleaning, but we did
go and see the sunset as Hay is so flat, the horizon was huge. We found out the
this was the largest completely flat area of land in the world with a sunset so sprectacular even the dogs enjoyed it.
We were all so busy taking photos, a good friend John Vromans didn't spot me taking photos of him!
While in Hay we visited the
Railway Station and the Gaol, but other than that there was not a lot to do.
Day 39
So, off to Echuca we went stopping momentarily at The Black Swamp to try and scare the kids with tales of the headless horseman - it didn't work.
We stayed on the Murray River just out of Echuca looking over the river. Since it seemed to be the last spot available, we figured it must not be very good, but at sunset it was perfect. The sun set right in front of us over the river. Making a fire of an evening and cooking marshmallows was lots of fun.
